BG Energy Challenge 2010 Clean-up Campaign (Community Service)

Hemaya, in collaboration with CARE Egypt, organized a clean-up campaign benefiting Muzeina and Tarabin tribes, as part of the BG Energy Challenge 2010 in Nuweiba, Egypt on Saturday, December 4, 2010.

The BG Energy Challenge is an annual fundraising event which brings teams from the oil sector for a weekend of hiking and climbing in the mountains and valleys of South Sinai. This year, the event included a community service dimension and more than 170 participants spent the morning collecting close to 5,000 kilograms of garbage off the streets and the public beach of Nuweiba and painting some houses and walls.

In addition to the success of the actual clean-up, Hemaya, CARE, and BG Egypt are planning sustainable activities that build on the momentum of the day, to mobilize the community in order to improve the conditions for the local Bedouin tribes.

Members of the local tribes, staff from the city council, rangers from Abu Galoum Protectorate, Hemaya NGO workers, the scouts, and some students and teachers from Basata School also joined hands with the event’s participants.

The activities included cleanup and painting of houses, walls and sidewalks in Muzeina, Tarabin, Arab Hemdan, as well as a cleanup of the public beach of the city.
